The longevity of a makeup look is almost entirely determined by what happens before the first layer of color goes on. Most people do not think about that.

Step 1 - Skin prep the night before

I ask all my brides to moisturize well the night before and to avoid trying any new products in the week leading up to the wedding. New products close to the event is how last-minute skin reactions happen. Stick to what your skin knows.

Step 2 - Day-of skincare, done right

The morning of, I apply moisturizer and let it absorb completely before primer goes on. If there is excess moisturizer sitting on the skin when primer is applied, it reduces how well the primer bonds. Most artists rush this step. I do not.

Step 3 - The right primer for the skin type

Primer is not universal. Oily skin needs a mattifying primer. Dry skin needs a hydrating one. Using the wrong primer type is one of the most common reasons makeup breaks down mid-day.

Step 4 - Setting at each layer, not just at the end

I set the foundation before adding blush and contour. I set again after blush. I set once more at the end with a finishing spray. This layered setting technique is what gives the final look its staying power. It adds time to the session but the result holds significantly longer.

Step 5 - Touch-up kit

Even with all of this, I leave every bride with a small touch-up kit - a blotting paper, the lip color used, and a compact. Not because the makeup will fall apart, but because twelve hours is a long time and some touch-ups are inevitable after eating or drinking.

None of this is complicated. It is just the unglamorous prep work that makes the glamorous result possible.
